The Secret Cabinet

About

For about three thousand years, desire has been art's most constant subject, and civilization has spent most of that time finding respectable ways to name it.

When Pompeii began coming out of the ash in 1748, the paintings and statues that embarrassed its finders were carried to Naples and locked in a room the museum called the Secret Cabinet. The door stayed mostly shut for nearly two centuries.

This is another cabinet, with the door left open. A working archive of that history, across every culture and century, one work and one story at a time.

We don't know where it ends. We keep walking.
