The story
In 1915 the dealer Joseph Duveen bought the whole fourteen-canvas cycle for $1,250,000 and sold it to Henry Clay Frick at cost. Before that it hung in J. P. Morgan's London house, which Bernard Berenson said looked 'like a pawnbroker's shop for Croesuses'.
