The story
Van Lerius showed his Godiva, making her sacrifice for the people of Coventry, at the Antwerp exhibition of 1870. The London publisher Henry Graves bought it in 1871, had Thomas L. Atkinson engrave it in mezzotint, and toured the canvas through most English towns, where it became famous.
