The story

Besnard printed this etching in an edition of 75 in 1909. Two years later the Gazette des Beaux-Arts reproduced it as Femme Nue to illustrate Paul Adam's essay on symbolism in Besnard's art, and the critic André-Charles Coppier admired the light trembling on her flesh and raised hair.
