The story

Michelangelo painted the original in 1530 for Alfonso d'Este, but when it was belittled as a little thing he refused to hand it over, and his assistant Antonio Mini took it to France. Reportedly destroyed for its lasciviousness, it survives in copies, the best known being this one in London.
