The story
Gerda Wegener often painted Lili Elbe, her spouse and favorite model, either alone or beside herself, showing Lili sometimes as a man and sometimes as a woman. The couple had moved to Paris in 1912 and threw themselves into its bohemian life of artists, dancers and carnivals.
