The story

Goltzius went to Italy to study ancient sculpture, drew the Farnese Hercules on the spot, and engraved it after returning to Haarlem in 1591. Dutch commentators of his day took the two small onlookers for Goltzius himself and his stepson, the engraver Jacob Matham.
