The story

Gustave Courbet saw Vallou de Villeneuve's nudes through his patron Alfred Bruyas and used them as source material for The Bathers of 1853 and The Painter's Studio. Two of Vallou's photographs show the model Henriette Bonnion in a pose close to Courbet's.
