The story

At the 1882 Paris Salon, street vendors cried out La Grande Iza as the hit of the show, and photographs of it sold by the thousand. Bukovac based his courtesan on Alexis Bouvier's serial novel and on Manet's Olympia, after scraping off an earlier version his teacher Cabanel had criticized.
