The story
The Salon jury of 1864 refused Courbet's first Venus and Psyche as immoral, and conservative critics read the myth as a thin cover for two women in bed. That canvas was destroyed in Berlin in World War II, and Courbet returned to the pair in smaller versions in 1866.
