Hayez painted the first of his three Bathshebas on his own initiative, showed it at the Brera in Milan in 1827, and saw it bought by King William I of Württemberg. When it resurfaced in 1998, Fernando Mazzocca called it one of the most sensational rediscoveries in 19th-century Italian art.
