The story

Cagnacci, whose turbulent life more than once became a scandal, painted single sensual figures like this Cleopatra for private collectors, mixing moral lessons with bare flesh. The Met's picture was shown in 2018 in Cincinnati beside his later Cleopatra from the Brera, the first time the two hung together.
