The story
Phryne, a wealthy courtesan of 4th-century BC Athens, was said to have posed for Praxiteles' Aphrodite of Knidos and to have inspired Apelles after he saw her bathe at Eleusis. Tried for impiety, she was acquitted, and legend credits her bared breasts with swaying the jury.
