The story

Venus set the mortal Psyche impossible tasks, including carrying a golden box to the underworld to bring back some of Proserpine's beauty. Warned not to look inside, Psyche opened it anyway and found only a deep sleep. Waterhouse shows her in a dark wood as a plume of smoke escapes the lid.
