The story

Liebermann's Samson and Delilah caused a sensation at the 1902 Berlin Secession. He stripped the biblical story of costume and painted Delilah as a muscular modern Amazon celebrating victory, playing on male fear of being overpowered by women as the emancipation movement grew.
