The story
When Kuroda showed this nude, painted in Paris, at the 1901 Hakuba-kai exhibition in Tokyo, police demanded that the lower body be hidden, their first crackdown on a nude at a Japanese exhibition. A dark red cloth was tied over it, and visitors kept pulling it down to look.
