The story

Ferdinando Gonzaga ordered four Hercules canvases from Reni for a room in his Villa Favorita, and a letter of January 1619 shows this pyre scene was the first one delivered. Louis XIV later bought the whole cycle in 1662 from the collector Jabach, and the paintings were held in high esteem at the French court.
