The story

Zurbarán was summoned from Seville to paint ten Labours of Hercules for the Hall of Realms in Philip IV's Buen Retiro Palace. Hercules, then held to be the ancestor of the Habsburgs, wrestles Antaeus here as a mirror for the king's own feats.
