The story

Painted in 1634 for the Hall of Realms in Philip IV's Buen Retiro Palace, this Hydra fight is one of ten Labours of Hercules by Zurbarán. The muscular hero stood for the king, since Hercules was claimed as an ancestor of the Habsburgs.
