The story
Long believed to be Goya's own, the Met's picture has been doubted since 1989 and may be an 1835 replica, possibly by his son Javier. Henry Osborne Havemeyer bought it from Durand-Ruel, and it came to the Met in 1929 with the Havemeyer bequest.
