The story

Collier drew this scene from the Tannhäuser legend, made famous by Wagner's opera, setting an armored knight before Venus and a nymph in her mythical realm, the Venusberg. The Atkinson Art Gallery in Southport bought the canvas in 1902, a year after it was painted.
