The story
Egusquiza idolized Wagner and met him several times, and here he painted the close of Tristan und Isolde, as Isolde dies on her lover's body. Shown at the 1911 Paris Salon, it won praise from Joséphin Péladan, though one critic judged it short of Wagner's music.
