The story

Régnier took his subject from the Greek poet Musaeus. Leander swam the Hellespont every night to reach Hero, a priestess of Aphrodite at Sestos, until one stormy night he drowned, and Hero in her grief killed herself. Melbourne bought the canvas through the Felton Bequest in 1955.
