The story

Merritt showed her remorseful Eve, alone in Eden without Adam, at the Royal Academy in 1885, where reviews were mixed. The architect Alfred Waterhouse bought it after the show, and in 1893 it won a medal at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
