The story
In Boccaccio's Decameron, Cimon, the seemingly simple son of a rich Cypriot, is transformed when he comes upon Iphigenia asleep by a fountain. Van Mieris set the encounter in a landscape in the manner of Poussin or Claude, while staying true to Boccaccio's details.
